Tax Refund – How to Get A Big One
No one likes to pay income taxes or file their income tax return. It’s a nuisance, and frankly, we’d all rather keep our money than give it to Uncle Sam. That’s not unusual; most people feel that way. Fortunately, most of us, including many business owners, get a tax refund each year instead of having to write a check.
Getting a tax refund helps cut the sting out of having to wade through piles of paperwork; it’s sort of a reward for having to endure the hassle. Of course, sometimes the refunds are relatively large, and sometimes the refunds are fairly small. It would be nice if you could get a large tax refund every year, or at least know that you’re getting the largest possible amount of money back.
The problem for most filers is that they have no idea how the tax code works. That’s not a criticism of the average taxpayer, by any means. The U.S. tax code is thousands of pages long, and it gets amended or modified pretty much every year. Even most professional tax preparers have trouble keeping up with all of the changes. It’s asking too much for the average taxpayer to know about these changes, since the topic isn’t a very interesting one to most people.
Most people don’t have a lot of free time to spend reading anything, and that means that your average taxpayer isn’t going to spend hours or even days trying to keep up with the latest changes in the tax code, even if it did mean a bigger tax refund. Nor should they. They just want to file their return every April 15 and hope that they’ll get the largest tax refund that they can.
A Big Tax Refund Means Finding the Right Tax Deductions
Of course, it would be nice if you had some control over the size of your tax refund. It would also be nice if you could sleep at night with some sort of assurance that you’re getting the largest tax refund that you can legally get. The last thing you want is to discover long after the fact that you overlooked some sort of income tax deduction that might have saved you hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
Such deductions exist. Obviously, not everyone can use all possible deductions, as there are thousands of potential things you can deduct from your taxable income, but you’re only legally allowed to deduct those items that actually pertain to your own finances.
You cannot, for example, take depreciation on a tractor or a combine if you’re not actually running a farm. If you were, you’d want to know about such things. That’s a pretty obvious example; pretty much anyone who owns a farm will already know that they can depreciate their equipment over time. But there may be dozens of other, more obscure tax deductions that may apply to farmers, plumbers, engineers, school teachers or people in just about any other profession that you can name that would, if they were taken appropriately, allow the filers to receive a larger tax refund.
In fact, with our tax code being so large, it would be pretty unusual for someone to work in a field that did not allow them to take some work or business related deductions from their taxable income. But it’s not reasonable to expect your typical plumber, engineer or school teacher to be aware of every possible item that comprises a potential tax deduction. That’s too much to ask of anyone who doesn’t work in the tax field on a regular basis.
What about getting a bigger tax refund with software such as TurboTax? Millions of people use such tax preparation programs, and they’re fine for many people. These automated tax preparation programs cover many scenarios and for a lot of people, they’ll offer the basic deductions that most people are permitted to take, allowing most people to get a tax refund. While most of these programs are very good, they cannot possibly allow for every possible deductible expense, however. That would require a much more complicated and expensive piece of software that would be harder to update and maintain and which would cost a great deal more to every buyer, even though the majority of people who use the software wouldn’t necessarily benefit from the added material.
Then again, you do want the largest possible tax refund that you can get, don’t you? Of course you do. You also probably don’t have a personal financial advisor or tax specialist on your payroll, particularly if you’re not running a big company. So what do you do? How can you be sure that you’re going to get the biggest tax refund you can legally get?
